I am writing to thank you for opposing the deceptively named Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). You know this is a bad bill for workers in Alaska and around the nation. We appreciate your efforts to defeat it, and urge you to continue your opposition in the next session of Congress. As you know, EFCA is not about giving employees free choice; instead, it is about giving unions greater power by allowing them to circumvent the secret ballot process in union-organizing elections. There is no valid reason for workers to lose this right. Without the protection of a secret ballot, workers would be subject to coercion and intimidation. EFCA would undermine the reforms that gave workers the right to vote their conscience without union leaders, co-workers, or employers looking over their shoulders. Furthermore, the bill’s binding arbitration provision risks putting the wages and benefits of Alaska’s workers in the hands of a Washington, D.C., bureaucrat. Big Labor's push for this legislation stalled in the Senate when you and your colleagues intervened. But now, with an increased Democratic majority and a President-elect who has expressed his strong support of EFCA, I am afraid we will see a renewed push for its passage. I am urging you to continue supporting workers' rights. Please work with your fellow Senators to stop EFCA once again and ensure that the right to a secret ballot and other important workers’ rights are preserved.
