I am writing to oppose the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), better known as “Card Check” legislation. Please vote “No” on this misguided legislation. Workers deserve a fair workplace, which includes the right to vote “yes” or “no” on unionization by secret ballot. Card Check legislation would take away this fundamental right, forcing workers to make their decision public. If this happens, workers could be exposed to intimidation or reprisals—from union members, co-workers, managers, and others. Americans cherish the secret ballot in public elections. It is a cornerstone of our democracy. There is no good reason why the principle of private elections should be banned from union votes. Congress should support policies that address the needs of workers and businesses together, rather than driving a wedge between the two sides. Again, I urge you to oppose Card Check legislation and its dangerous, undemocratic provisions. I look forward to hearing where you stand on this important matter. Thank you.
