The Next Tests

Fresh from incumbent defeats in the Utah Republican nominating convention and the West Virginia Democratic primary, we now turn our attention to four new crucial primaries next Tuesday. Voters in Arkansas, Kentucky, Oregon, and Pennsylvania will go to the polls for their statewide primary elections where more surprising results could be on tap. We have fresh polls coming from Kentucky and Pennsylvania. The Survey USA (5/9-11) conclusions again suggest that Rand Paul, the son of Texas Congressman and former presidential candidate Ron Paul, will win the Kentucky Republican Senatorial nomination over establishment favorite Trey Grayson. The data shows Paul commanding 49% and the Secretary of State falling way back to 33%. Democrats are in a nip and tuck battle between Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo and Attorney General Jack Conway. The SUSA numbers project Mongiardo to be clinging to a one-point, 38-37%, lead. To the north, three new PA polls all post Democrat Sen. Arlen Specter either two points ahead or behind Philadelphia area Congressman Joe Sestak in the Democratic primary. The most reliable of the trio, Quinnipiac University's Q-Poll (5/5-10), gives Specter a slight 44-42% advantage. The winner will face GOP former Rep. Pat Toomey. Tuesday will prove to be one of the most important days in the 2010 election cycle.
