As your constituent, I encourage you to support energy policies that enable us to tap our nation's vast oil and natural gas resources---onshore and offshore. This important step forward would add much-needed jobs to our struggling economy and ensure our energy security well into the future.

The oil and natural gas industry employs at least 9.2 million people, and new jobs are created every day. Developing domestic oil and natural gas supplies that have been off-limits could create thousands of new jobs and bring in an estimated $1.7 trillion in government revenue.

A recent Pew survey shows that 63 percent of Americans favor offshore oil and natural gas development in U.S. waters. I agree: We need it. We have it. And I believe we should get it.

Increased domestic energy development will continue to fuel our economy, provide jobs and supply much-needed oil and natural gas resources. For these reasons, I ask that you support efforts aimed at expanding access to our nation's domestic energy resources. I am writing today to express my strong support for U.S. access to energy derived from Canadian oil sands. While a vocal minority wants to limit or ban oil sands energy development, such policies would hurt America's economy and energy security while making oil sands more available to China, India and other competitor nations.

Canada is a strong ally of the United States, and it is also a lead source of crude oil and natural gas and our trading partner. We should not increase U.S. dependence on energy from volatile nations while turning our backs on supplies from a stable, reliable neighbor.

My position in support of access to oil sands is shared by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. State Department. Last year, the DOE noted that "Canadian oil sands are critically important to U.S. energy security---and to North American security." In August, the State Department supported increased pipeline capacity between Canada and the United States, saying that it will "advance a number of strategic interests of the United States."

I would also like to point out that, over the past two decades, there has been a dramatic reduction in the levels of greenhouse gas emission from the development from oil sands. According to the Canadian government, carbon dioxide intensity from oil sands has been reduced by 27 percent since 1990---and advances in carbon capture, oil recovery and energy efficiency continue to be made.

The federal government maintains that, although the development of renewable energy is expanding, our nation will still rely on oil and natural gas for the majority of its energy needs for decades to come. With the world's second-largest reserve behind Saudi Arabia, Canada's plentiful oil sand deposits provide an important, dependable supply to U.S. refineries, especially in the Midwest. Investment in Canadian oil sands could also create thousands of well-paying American jobs, contribute additional tax revenues and help secure vital energy supplies.
